How to find any case on eCourts in under 60 seconds
Every Indian advocate has been there: a client calls asking for the next date, and you are stuck digging through a diary, a WhatsApp thread, or the eCourts portal with the wrong search filter selected. It does not have to take ten minutes. With the right approach, you can pull up any case in under a minute.
The fastest route: search by CNR
The CNR (Case Number Record) is a unique 16-character code assigned to every case filed in a district court or High Court connected to the eCourts network. If you have it, ignore every other search box.
- Go to the eCourts Services portal.
- Open Case Status → CNR Number.
- Paste the 16-digit CNR and enter the captcha.
You get the complete case history — parties, the current stage, the last order, and the next hearing date — without knowing the court, the case type, or the year of filing. The CNR never changes, even if the case is transferred between courts.
If you do not have the CNR
Most of the time you are working from a party name or your own bar registration. The portal supports several fallbacks:
- Party Name search — enter the petitioner or respondent name, select the state, district, and court complex, and choose pending or disposed.
- Advocate search — search by advocate name or Bar registration number to list every matter linked to you in a court complex. This is the closest the portal gets to a personal cause list.
- Filing / Registration number — if you have the filing number and year, this resolves directly to the case.
- FIR number — useful in criminal matters where you know the police station and FIR but not the case number.
Why it still feels slow
The portal works, but it was built for occasional lookups, not for a busy practice. You re-select the same state and district every time, re-solve a captcha on every search, and there is no way to "save" a case so the next date finds you.
